Historical events in 1782
- Repeal of the Act of Proscription. Allowing tartan to be worn without fear of transportation.
- The 1st US commercial bank, Bank of North America, opened in Philadelphia.
- Daniel Webster (d.1852, aka Black Dan) American political leader, Senator and orator, lawyer, statesman, administrator and diplomat, was born in Salisbury, N.H. In 1830 he proclaimed "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!" He was Secretary of State before the Civil War.
- Johann Wyss, Swiss folklorist, writer (Swiss Family Robinson), was born.
- Netherlands recognized the United States.
- Congress approved the Great Seal of the United States and the eagle as its symbol.
- Mozart's opera "Das Entfuehrung aus dem Serail" premiered in Vienna.
- General George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart.
- The
United States and Britain signed preliminary peace articles in Paris,
recognizing American independence and ending the Revolutionary War.
- The first English Bible in America was published.
- The US declared the eagle was as its national bird.
- The Wat Phra Kaew Temple was built in Bangkok, Thailand.
